Web Design

My name is Aaron.
This is who I am.

I take the design journey with the client, creating full spectrum campaigns & multimedia experiences.

Everything tells a story. Good layout tells a compelling story.

I create, manage, and shepherd logo and branding that elevates.

I create visually captivating informational designs that educate and engage.

Video creation is designing in all dimensions at once, and I love it.

Pixel perfection, intuitive navigation, and engaging experiences.

360º Design

I ask insightful questions and take creative leaps. I craft multi-layered, multi-item multimedia campaigns that tell their own story and seamlessly fit with the whole.

Layout

Successful layout is far more than just clever design. I make sure that multi-page documents tell a cohesive story and I quality control for dozens of individual components on each job. I work tirelessly to make sure that delivery is flawless, on time, and makes an impact.

Video Editing

I create videos with the skills of a designer, eyes of a stage director, the ears of a musician, and the timing of a dancer. Video editing is storytelling in many dimensions at once, and I love it.

Bio

I have a Bachelors Degree in Graphic Design from the College of New Jersey and a Masters Degree in Environmental Studies from Evergreen State College. I have been designing professionally for over twenty years.

And design is just one my passions.

Currently, I live on a small farm in rural southwestern Virginia with my wife, two amazing dogs, our three horses, and Geronimoo the Yard Cow.

I am a multi-instrument musician, a horse rider, and animal caretaker. I am a craftsman and a tinkerer, a fitness practitioner, a natural leader and a deep collaborator. I adore the outdoors and the natural world. I love jumping into the middle, working hard, figuring things out, and uncovering the joy.

I seek always to do well by people, personally and professionally. My Masters thesis focused on creating and sustaining professional groups that do transformative work, and I won the ERCA 2021 Dennis Chase Staff award for positivity, kindness, creativity, flexibility, and professionalism.

I am at my best when working for organizations whose work improves the lives of others and/or the world around them. Yet regardless of where I am designing, I am always giving my utmost to make sure that my work is good as it can possibly be.

Let's Work Together!

Tony's Pizza, Stuart VA

The new Tony’s Pizza is revitalizing an old and established family restaurant in the heart of an Appalachian small town.  I helped bring a modern and engaging aesthetic to their logo, printed materials, and social media, and I guided delivery at each step of the way.

Sweet Briar College

Sweet Briar College is a small, female-student-only college in central eastern Virginia. The bold colors and paint-splash design reflects the tagline “unleash your bold”. The branding and aesthetic was adapted from work done by previous designers. Work included print and web material and social media pieces.

The "Amberhall Adventure"

The Amberhall Adventure is the nickname of an ambitious, multi-day, multi-location, Victorianpunk themed wedding adventure that took place in 2016. We hand-built the look and feel from the ground up. Each illustration in the Wedding Newspaper is a clever foreshadowing of events or a humorous reference to one of the main characters. I designed print, social media, and web materials that lent visual heft to an experience that we still talk about today.

ERCF Bike Tour

The Essex Region Conservation Foundation Bike Tour is a family friendly wellness challenge, a celebration of the region’s outdoor opportunities, and an outlet for educating about and supporting local conservation. I helped craft a broad design and marketing campaign that combined these stories, and included logo and ID design, posters, handbills, social media marketing, swag, signage, and more.

A 36-page biannual magazine

The 36-page Spring 2024 issue of CALS magazine pushes creative boundaries while still staying inside of Virginia Tech’s storied branding guidelines. The aesthetic goals I worked for include a clean, colorful, science-based, energetic, and modern design.

ERCA Annual Report

A 24-page, year-end organizational report

The 2019 ERCA Annual Report is a 24-page showcase of ERCA’s achievements and progress, by-the-numbers. The layout merges ERCA’s branding colors with its five organizational pillars, which provide a cohesive, engaging, open, and clean package that shows off the important work that they do.

Individual Layouts

I create many individual designs for a variety of clients that each tell their own story. From rack cards and collateral, to web banners and assets, to trade show displays, I am constantly using my layout chops to create varied work that shines.

Windsor Essex Regional Energy Plan

A key goal of the Windsor-Essex Regional Energy Plan’s campaign is to engage residents, businesses, and municipalities of Southern Ontario’s Essex County in investing in their own sustainable energy future, through coordinating in the adoption of the region’s Energy Plan. The design above graphically represents Essex County’s green and built environments and key energy features at a glance.

How ERCA Facilitates Development

The Essex Region Conservation Authority regulates and advises on development matters related to flooding and erosion control in the watersheds that it governs. This infographic references the topology of the region to illustrate, at a glance, how ERCA helps, rather than impedes, development within its ecologically sensitive areas.

E3 Washington Timeline

E3 Washington seeks to grow capacity for environmental and sustainability education in the regions where it is active. At the time of this infographic’s creation, E3 Washington wanted to graphically showcase its milestones, mission, and vision, in order to quickly and effectively engage stakeholders.

Forged Valor

Forged Valor Horsemanship is an organization that changes the lives of veterans and youth through horsemanship, livestock handling, and trade skills. Their website reflects the design and color palette of rugged, honest, outdoors living. The site features web store integration.

Forged Valor

The An Equnox Tale website is a Kickstarter pre-launch site for a poem set to illustrations. The illustrations sell this book, and so this website heavily utilizes design elements from the illustrations as well as elements pulled from the art itself.

AZimmer Design

You are experiencing AZimmer Design. My goal with this site is to make it big, bold, and full of contrast. It demonstrates my flair for color and style, and is an intentional and playful bucking of the current ‘clean, simple’ aesthetic.

The House of Hokie Gear

The House of Hokie Gear is the external merchandise site for Virginia Tech’s Licensing Department. While this site is visually dense (at client request), it does feature scroll-sensitive motion graphic headers at top and bottom and custom-designed call-out images, all created within a restrictive CMS environment.
